I've used other software to produce heightfields which are interesting, but very time intensive and rough on those 1/8 in ball bits. I've been working on producing acceptable renditions of photos in wood. The only downside I am yet ware of with Inkscape is that it is computer resource intensive - it will be a bit slow on average or older machines.
I will post some photos as the opportunity presents. I have saved files in EPS format, and VCarve has opened every one without a hitch - including some very large and complex drawings.Ĭonversions of line art have invariably been virtually error free, very clean, few or no open vectors, and have VCarved beautifully.

This is available for download FREE as Open Source software. So far, after attempting with marginal success to use RasterVect 10.0, Corel OCT-Trace Limited edition (if others have achieved great success with these programs, educate me - I've benn very unhappy with my results), and a few other lesser programs, best results have been obtained with Inkscape using the embedded Potrace tracing code.
In an effort to make use of a large collection of raster art (clip art, Dover publication designs, scans of print art, and digital photos), finding decent raster to vector conversion was critical. As a new user of VCarve, I've had a few moments of frustration, many delights, and have learned a few things.
